SanDisk Extreme® Solid State Drive

SanDisk Extreme® Solid State Drive

The Coldest Journey is using SanDisk Extreme SSDs (240GB1) to store video and photo imagery created during the 6-month traverse of the Antarctic.

The team chose SanDisk SSD because not only does their solid state architecture resist wear and data corruption but they also offer exceptionally fast read/write speeds and low power consumption, all features that make them the ideal storage medium for the expedition environment.

Solid state architecture is robust and reliable. The expedition cabooses are being dragged over 2000 miles across ice and rock so storing the images on mechanical hard drives that are highly susceptible to shock was deemed to be too risky. SanDisk SSDs are designed to withstand shock and vibration and rated at 1.4 to 2.5 million hours mean time before failure (MTBF)2

Exceptionally fast read/write speeds - up to 540 MB/s read3 and 460 MB/s read for a 480GB SSD - allow the team to make the video transfers and create back-ups very quickly.

Low power consumption makes the best use of the expedition's available power resources.
